Mike Phillip's F27

Below is an extract from Mike's kit car site - to read more, please visit his web site.

This is a brief outline of my kit car construction which took 3 enjoyable years (which included two house moves)! I constructed the spaceframe chassis from detailed plans using 1" box section steel tube. The mechanical running gear is from the mk11 escort and the engine ,gearbox and rear axle, steering are all retained on the new car.

The front suspension is made from the plans and consists of a lower wishbone and upper rocking arm and uses adjustable coil over shock units. This setup reduces unsprung weight (as in f1 cars) and works really well on my car. The rear comprises of a home made 5 link setup with brackets made and welded to the axle, it is sprung on two triumph dolomite sprint coil overs, and also works very well. The brakes are dual circuit using cortina discs and calipers, along with escort drums at the rear, a non servo master cylinder is employed. The instruments are actually escort units grafted in behind the dash panel and look almost as good as the after market items (but a darn sight cheaper I dare say). The body work is made from alloy sheet riveted to the chassis, no less than 300 rivets went into each floorpan alone, I could see rivets in my cornflakes the next day!

On the road the car performs very well and is very stable into and out of a tight corner, it is very stable at high speed and I must say that I'm impressed with my handiwork (I'm bragging now). Not a rattle or creek is to be heard when out on the road .

My car is the my first car I've ever completed and I must say that I thoroughly  enjoyed both the build and I must give credit to my wife Sandra for putting up with me during the build which took me far longer than normal because I  made most things instead of buying them , these include items such as seats ,fuel tank, windscreen surround not to mention the paint job (never done it before).

If anybody out there fancies building one of these or other seven type sportscars , feel free to contact me for a chat or maybe some advice if you are in the middle of a build .
